For a home or business, battery storage is a practical way to retain electricity for later use. Solar panels generate electricity; the battery stores energy through reversible electrochemical reactions. It does not store sunlight or keep energy particles on a shelf.
When does the battery charge?
Charging behavior depends on the equipment, settings, and approved system design. A system may charge from solar, and some designs also allow grid charging. The controls determine when to store energy and when to supply selected loads.
How long will it last?
Separate energy capacity in kilowatt-hours from power output in kilowatts. Runtime depends on usable stored energy, actual demand, reserve settings, and losses. A cloudy day does not mean every battery can support the building until sunshine returns.
Storage and backup are different questions
Confirm whether the proposed system supports outage operation, which circuits it supports, and how it isolates from the utility. The presence of a battery alone does not establish whole-home backup capability.
