A good lighting upgrade balances energy use, visibility, comfort, controls, and maintenance. Selecting the lowest-wattage fixture alone does not establish a good design.
Survey the existing lighting
Record fixture types, operating hours, mounting heights, light levels, and maintenance problems. Identify spaces where glare, uneven coverage, or poor controls affect the work.
Specify the desired result
Compare light output, distribution, color quality, dimming compatibility, and the environment where fixtures will operate. Coordinate occupancy and daylight controls with actual use of the space.
Calculate savings from the proposed design
Compare existing and proposed power draw and operating hours. Include installation, controls, access, and maintenance costs. Product life and savings depend on the equipment and conditions; avoid a blanket payback promise.
Verify assistance before purchase
Ask the applicable program administrator about current eligibility, approved products, and preapproval requirements. An LED installation does not automatically qualify for a rebate, tax deduction, or building certification. Have your tax adviser review any claimed tax benefit.
