Look for Relevant Project Experience
Ask for examples similar to your scope and clarify the contractor’s actual role. Did the company perform the electrical construction, install the complete system, or work as a subcontractor? BD’s case studies identify the work behind the project.
Compare the Scope, Not Just the Total
- Which equipment, materials, and quantities are included?
- Who handles engineering, permits, utility coordination, and inspections?
- Are trenching, restoration, roof work, and shutdown coordination included or excluded?
- Which site conditions and allowances could change the cost?
- How are schedule changes and additional work documented?
Ask Who Will Be Responsible
Confirm the proposed team, applicable licenses, insurance documentation, and the contact responsible for questions during construction. Ask how the contractor coordinates with other trades and handles issues discovered in the field.
Make Energy-System Assumptions Explicit
For solar and storage proposals, ask about the production estimate, shading assumptions, equipment compatibility, and how the proposed system relates to your electricity use. For backup, request a clear description of the loads served, operating limits, and assumptions behind any runtime estimate.
Understand the Handoff
Discuss inspections, commissioning, monitoring access, operating instructions, and the process for requesting support. Equipment coverage and project-specific contractual terms should be reviewed in the proposal and agreement.

Customer reviews can help you evaluate communication and the experience of working with a contractor. Combine them with a review of relevant projects and a clearly documented scope.
