Winter backup planning starts with the loads you need to support, including heating controls, refrigeration, pumps, and communications.
Define power and runtime
List the equipment that must run together and its starting requirements. Battery energy capacity and power output are different limits. Generator capability also depends on sizing, fuel supply, operating conditions, and maintenance.
Do not assume every system covers every load
Battery storage is optional for many grid-connected solar projects. If outage power is required, confirm the proposed backup configuration and supported circuits. Sensitive equipment may need a separate uninterrupted-power solution.
Consider a combined design
Solar, batteries, and a generator can work together when the equipment and controls are compatible and the system is engineered for that arrangement. A generator cannot simply be connected to an existing solar or battery system. Transfer controls, supported loads, charging behavior, and utility isolation must be addressed in the design.
Prepare before the storm
Review operating instructions and service requirements. For portable equipment, read our generator safety guide. Confirm how household priorities and system settings affect backup operation.
